Air Force Defeats Lamar, 4-3
The Air Force women's tennis team improved its record to 2-2 this season with an exciting 4-3 victory over Lamar University Sunday in El Paso, Texas. The Falcons, who were rained out on Saturday against New Mexico State, split their two matches in El Paso this weekend.
Air Force had to come from behind against the Cardinals after losing the doubles point. Lamar won at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions, while Air Force's No. 2 duo of seniors Katie Tomkie and Miclynn Crail defeated Lamar's Kendall Gibbs and Marine LeRoy, 8-5, for the Falcons' lone doubles win. Sophomore Karissa Walker tied the team score at 1-all with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Gibbs at the No. 2 singles position. Junior Kat Bushey gave AFA a 2-1 lead by defeating Andrea Martinez at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Lamar fought back and took a 3-2 lead with wins at No. 3 and 5, both in three sets. Falcons freshman Lauren Wilson came from behind at the No. 4 position to beat Hayley Bakker, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 and tie the match at 3-all. Crail then sealed the victory for Air Force by beating LeRoy, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. The Falcons are idle until traveling to West Point, N.Y., for four matches beginning Friday, Feb. 18 against Fordham. Air Force then plays Army on Saturday, Feb. 19 in the 2005 Gideon Cup match.
