Air Force Splits Pair of Home Matches

    USAFA, Colo. -
The Air Force women's tennis team split a pair of matches Sunday at the Academy in its first matches of the 2005 spring campaign. The Falcons defeated CU-Colorado Springs, 7-0, before falling to nationally-ranked University of Colorado, 5-2.

Against CU-Colorado Springs, Air Force did not lose a set during the six singles matches and the most one of its doubles teams lost was two games.

AFA's No. 1 doubles team of junior Kat Bushey and sophomore Karissa Walker opened the match with an 8-1 victory over CU-Colorado Springs' Natasacha Vandermolen and Lauren Daniels. Bushey also defeated Daniels, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles position.

In the team's second match of the day, Air Force lost the doubles point as CU, ranked No. 70 in the country won at all three positions. Bushey and Walker fell to Kendra Strandemo and Martina Sedivec, 8-5, at No. 1, while AFA lost 8-4 at the Nos. 2 and 3 matches.

In singles, the Falcons posted victories at No. 3 and 6. Freshman Lauren Wilson recorded an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory over Veera Nurmi at No. 3, while senior Miclynn Crail defeated Brooke Sternm 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot. Nurmi was ranked No. 22 in the Central Region following the fall season and beat Wilson during the fall season.

"The match against the University of Colorado was great for us because it showed us where we were at as a team," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. " I felt we played extremely well in the doubles and thought we played well enough to win at no.1 & no.2, but just did not convert. Lauren Wilson did an outstanding job at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3 against a player whom she had lost to in the fall in straight sets."

Air Force returns to action on Friday, Feb. 4 against UTEP in El Paso, Texas at 2 p.m.
