Day Two Results
San Diego, Calif. – The women’s tennis squad picked up a multitude of wins in the second day of action at the Aztec Invitational on the campus of San Diego State University, Saturday afternoon. Freshman Meredith Jones battled her way to the championship match of her respective flight, while two doubles teams picked up wins on the back sides of their brackets.
The Falcons had a strong start in doubles action as freshmen duo Carley Hatcliff and Meredith Laskey outscored Acero and Mulbarger of San Diego State, 6-3. Clarissa Jolley and Meredith Jones, another freshman pair, battled to a 7-6 (2) win over Heimuli and Turley of Utah.
In singles action, Elizabeth Barnickel, Jones and Laskey picked up a win apiece. A default victory in the championship semi-finals match yielded Jones an opportunity to play for first in the Green Flight. Laskey notched a victory in two over Seriana Slatzen of Cal Poly, 7-5, 6-4. Barnickel downed Fresno State’s Georgia Lawson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
“We made progress today in both singles and doubles,” explained head coach Kim Gidley. “Some of our women competed with tremendous energy; if we get everyone on the same page on the same day, this team can compete with anyone.”
The team wraps the final day of play on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
