Oct. 31, 2008
The Air Force women's tennis team completed the first day of the 2008 Florida State Invitational Friday in Tallahassee, Fla. Freshman Tahlia Smoke and junior Erlyn Rudico each posted a singles victory on a day that saw several of the Falcons play nationally ranked opponents.
Smoke rallied to defeat Alyona Tsutskova of Florida International, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of her flight, then fell in the semifinals to Jessica Wente of Florida State, 6-2, 6-2. Rudico, meanwhile, won her round robin singles match against Mimi Songsermsawas of Oregon, 7-5, 6-3. She lost her other match on Friday to Maria Delores Pazo of Florida International, 6-3, 6-4.
"Tahlia really battled today in a high intensity match," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "I have never been happier to see a person win a match and Erlyn had one of her best days of the fall in singles."
The Falcons will continue the tournament on Saturday.
