Atlanta, Ga. – The Falcon women’s tennis squad concluded action at the Piedmont Invitational with multiple wins, Saturday evening, in Atlanta, Ga. Sophomore TJ Fumagalli and junior Elizabeth Barnickel proved to be the top doubles team as they captured three wins in as many tries on the event.
“The last day of a long tournament is always the toughest,” said head coach Kim Gidley. “This team showed their opponents what Warrior-Women and Cadet-Athletes are capable of.”
Playing late night singles matches, the team dominated UT-Chattanooga; winning six-of-eight matches. Air Force battled to redemption after falling to the Mocs last season, 4-3, with a strong team.
“To win in straight sets at the top-three positions and dominate them in singles shows how much talent this team has,” exclaimed Gidley. “This is great momentum moving toward the Spring schedule.”
Doubles was followed by Air Force competing against Purdue in the No. 1 flight. The Fumagalli-Barnickel duo went 3-0 to win the No. 1 doubles flight.
“Unfortunately, Purdue retired the following two doubles matches,” continued Gidely. “It would have been nice to watch our freshmen duo of Jones and Harvey compete to officially win the No. 2 flight.”
“This team just gets better every time they step on the court,” Gidely explained. “I am so proud of how they are competing and growing as a team.”
“Overall I’m pleased with the effort of our women and am proud to have great support from our Air Force friends and family and the Georgia Parents’ Club; it was a special event for us,” concluded Gidley.
