Atlanta, Ga. – The Falcon women’s tennis squad played a long day of matches following inclement weather changes to the schedule, Friday afternoon, at the Piedmont Invitational hosted by Georgia State University.
The Falcons saw action in two doubles matches and two singles matches apiece. In opening singles action, six Falcons came up short in matches against the Georgia State lineup.
In the following matches against Purdue, a pair of Falcons picked up singles wins. Falcon freshman Meredith Jones bested Ena Babic, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-2, while freshman teammate, Ashleigh Harvey, beat Rafaella Baquerizo in two, 6-2, 6-4.
“I was really pleased with how the team raised their level of play from the first set of singles matches,” said head coach Kim Gidley. “Against Purdue, who won the Big 10 Conference just a few years back, our cadets really stepped it up and played at a higher level.”
In the first set of doubles matches on the day, Air Force’s top duo, TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel, commanded a 6-1 victory over UT-Chattanooga’s Zaporozhets and Caswell.
In the second set of doubles matches against Georgia State, Fumagalli and Barnickel topped Danailova and Ramirez, 7-5. Freshmen duo, Harvey and Meredith Jones found their rhythm as they picked up a win over the Panthers’ Muminovic and Taluyenko, 6-2.
“In the doubles we had some bright spots and have been making adjustments from match to match,” continued Gidley. “Overall, the team competed well. At this time of year we want to play tough teams and get better every time we step in the court, which is what they did. Tomorrow's matches will be in indoors in the evening and we are ready to compete.”
Air Force will continue action tomorrow against UT-Chattanooga in singles and Purdue in doubles.
