Cecil Advances to Finals of Duck Invite

Melissa Cecil won two more matches on Saturday and advanced to the finals of the 2011 Duck Women's Tennis Invitational in Eugene, Ore. Cecil and doubles partner Tahlia Smoke also advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket and will face teammates Hannah Dake and Tasha Hueffner in the finals.
Cecil started the day by handing teammate Christine Molina her first singles loss of the fall season, 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, then rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Valeska Hoath of Portland in the finals. She will face Haley Driver of Oregon in the finals on Sunday. Driver downed Air Force freshman Tiffany Tran, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarters.
"Melissa did a great job battling back today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "She is such a great competitor and it is nice to see her hard work pay off."
In doubles, Cecil and Smoke defeated Moira Hedberg and Chrissy Uriarte of Eastern Washington, 8-5, while Dake and Hueffner downed Kristen Eggleston and Michaela Oldani, of New Mexico, 8-3.
"We have some of the best doubles representing the Air Force Academy in years this season," said Gidley.
