Falcons Complete Day One at FIU Tourney
Oct. 15, 2010
The Air Force women's tennis team completed the first day of the 2010 Panther Invitational hosted by Florida International in Miami, Fla., on Friday. The Falcons swept their three doubles matches against Florida Atlantic, but lost all six singles matches against the host FIU Panthers. In the doubles matches, Air Force cruised at the No. 1 spot as junior Tahlia Smoke and sophomore Melissa Cecil routed FAU's top team of Natasha Basma and Madeline Johnson, 8-1. The other two victories were a little more difficult as senior Christen Monreal and freshman Anastasia Hueffner won at No. 2, defeating Marlene Ryan and Natasha Phillips, 8-6, and senior Sarah Cassman and junior Megumi Voight pulled out a tight 9-8 (7-5) victory at the No. 3 position over Erika Mrazkova and Virginia Augustin. In singles against FIU, the Falcons lost four of the five matches that were played in straight sets. Cecil had to default the No. 3 match due to an injury and Hueffner battled Magali Holt to three sets at the No. 5 spot before falling, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0. Monreal lost to Liset Brito, the country's 62nd-ranked player, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, while Smoke fell at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3 to Chrissie Seredini. The Falcons are back in action on Saturday as they will face Florida Atlantic in singles at 9:30 a.m., Barry University on doubles at noon and Florida International in doubles at 3:30 p.m. Air Force vs. Florida Atlantic Doubles
