Smoke and Cecil Advance to Regional Quarterfinals
Oct. 14, 2011
The Air Force women's doubles team of senior Tahlia Smoke and junior Melissa Cecil rallied from a 7-4 deficit and saved two points to win their third straight match at the 2011 ITA Mountain Region Women's Tennis Championships Friday in Las Vegas, Nev. The pair defeated Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva of Wyoming, 9-8(2).
Smoke and Cecil will face the tournament's No. 2-seeded team of Aleksandra Josifoska and Lucia Batta from UNLV in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. (PT) on Saturday. This matches the best result by any Air Force singles or doubles team at a Division I regional tournament, equaling the quarterfinal appearance by the doubles team of Kat Bushey and Christine Abayan in 2005.
Also on Saturday, the rest of the Falcon team will host Texas-Permian Basin and Colorado College in dual matches at the Academy. Air Force will play UT-PB twice, at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and CC at 12:30 p.m. The matches are free to the public and will be played on the Academy's outdoor intercollegiate courts.
