Smoke and Cecil Advance to Third Round of Region Doubles Tourney

    Senior Tahlia Smoke and junior Melissa Cecil advanced to the third round of the doubles bracket at the 2011 ITA Mountain Region Women's Tennis Championships Thursday in Las Vegas, Nev. The pair will face Sasa Nemcova and Christa Gecheva of Wyoming Friday morning.

    Smoke and Cecil defeated Andie Young and Kelsie Craig of BYU 8-2 in the first round, then beat Boise State's Morgan Basil and Kaitlyn Brown by the same score in the second round.

    The Falcons' other doubles team of junior Hannah Dake and sophomore Tasha Hueffner won their first- round match on Thursday, downing Jaci West and Kristina Voytsekhovic of Utah State, 8-6. Unfortunately, they lost in the second round to the tournament's third-seeded team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova of Wyoming, 8-4.

    In singles action, Smoke and Cecil each lost in the third round on Thursday. Smoke fell to Sophia Bergner of Denver, 6-1, 6-3, while Cecil won the first set before falling to Laurence Pelchat of Montana, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
