Falcons Complete Play at USFA Invitational

Air Force claimed one second-place and four third-place finishes at the 2007 USAFA Women's Tennis Invitational, which was completed Saturday at the Academy. Freshman Samantha Sarkis placed second in singles flight 7, while junior Christine Abayan and freshman Sarah Cassman each won her third-place match in flight 2 and 6, respectively.
Sarkis, who won two matches on Friday, lost the flight 7 final, 6-4, 6-1 to Gozde Unkaya of Texas Tech. Meanwhile, Abayan downed Whitney Trotter of East Tennessee State, 6-0, 6-4, and Cassman beat Mikele Smith of Denver, 6-1, 6-2, after each lost her semifinal match in straight sets. Junior Meghan Kiser finished third in flight 4, which consisted of four players and a round-robin format.
In doubles play, Abayan and Kiser finished third and Sarkis and senior Erika Shortridge finished fifth in the top flight. Sarkis and Shortridge defeated Michelle Brown and Carly Van Hollen of Wyoming, 8-4, in the fifth-place match. Sophomore Erlyn Rudico and Monreal placed fourth in flight 2, while Wilson and freshman Katrina Eromin finished fourth in flight 3.
The Falcons will split their squad next weekend, with Wilson and Abayan playing at the ITA Central Region Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., while others will compete at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
