Salt Lake City, Utah – The women’s tennis squad completed the second day of action at the ITA Western Regional Tournament, Thursday afternoon, at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Sophomore TJ Fumagalli led the Falcons by advancing to the next round of action in both singles and doubles events. Fumagalli and doubles partner, Elizabeth Barnickel, will continue competition in the championship bracket.
“In the doubles portion I was pleased with how both teams competed,” said head coach Kim Gidley. “TJ and Elizabeth have played some really strong teams and have had an opportunity to play at a high level consistently.”
“Meredith Jones and Meredith Laskey played at a high level,” explained Gidley. “They made some great adjustments but just fell short against a strong team.”
In the singles portion, Fumagalli refused to drop a set, a tough feat to accomplish at this tournament. In her second match she battled against Boise State’s top player, who was nationally ranked and has posted a number of big wins in her career.
“I am really proud of how Fumagalli is growing as a player and making adjustments to play with the best players in the country,” said Gidley.
Jones showed her mental toughness and ability in a great come back after losing the first set, 7-6 and 9-7 in the tie-breaker, coming back to win the next two sets handily.
“That is the great thing about this tournament,” continued Gidley. “Every round is against the top players in the region and you have to be on top of your game."
Action continues tomorrow with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. Each day will begin with doubles play at 9 a.m. MT, followed by singles play. The Mountain Region comprises of 19 teams and hundreds of student-athletes showcasing the event this week.
