    The Air Force women’s tennis team won five of seven singles matches and two of four doubles contests on the first day of the ITA Mountain Region Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev.

    Juniors Natasha Rizvi and Marcelli Magday and freshman Jocelle Rudico each won her singles match in straight sets while senior Anastasia Hueffner and freshman Lily Forlini each won in three sets. Magday rallied from a deficit in each set to defeat Annemieke Witte of New Mexico State, 7-6(2), 6-4, while Forlini upset Paola Artiga of UNLV, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

    In doubles action, Rizvi and Magday eased past Iva Parapunova and Paulina Lopez, 8-1, while Rudico and junior Tiffany Tran snuck past Iren Kotseva and Kamelia Dimitrova of UNLV, 8-7(7).

    “Our passion and fight for the day was great,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “Marcelli (Magday) had a great come back in singles and Lily (Forlini) also played a very disciplined match against a top ranked international player from UNLV.”

    The tournament continues on Thursday.
