Falcons Complete Day One of USAFA Invitational

The Air Force women's tennis team completed the first day of the 2010 USAFA Invitational Friday at the Academy. The Falcons won three singles and three doubles matches during the day. Each of AFA's three doubles teams won a match, including senior Sarah Cassman and junior Megumi Voight, who beat Jill Kappel and Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado, 8-6, in the quarterfinals of the "C" flight. The Falcons' top duo of junior Tahlia Smoke and sophomore Melissa Cecil downed Steffanie Catlin and Elizabeth Tapia of UNC, 8-2, in the first round before falling in the quarterfinals to Paulina Smatova and Patricia Swaronski of Oregon, 8-5. Senior Christen Monreal and freshman Anastasia Hueffner also won their first round match of the "B" flight over Tori Arneson and Lauren Pick of Colorado State, 8-4, but lost their quarterfinal match to Lacey Smyth and Kim Stubbe of Arizona, 8-5. In singles play, Monreal won her first round match of the top flight, 6-4, 6-3 over Malika Rose of Oklahoma State, while Voight won the quarterfinal match of the "F" flight, 6-3, 6-2, over Laura Richardson of Nee Mexico. The other AFA singles victory was by Hueffner, who won a consolation match in the "E" flight over Madie Kern of Colorado, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. The tournament resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. Air Force Results
