Falcons Wrap Up Play at Texas Tech Invitational

    The Air Force women's tennis team wrapped up play Saturday at the 2006 Scarborough Specialties Open hosted by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Sophomore Christine Abayan had the best individual finish for the Falcons, finishing third in the top singles bracket.

    Abayan, the only Falcon to go 2-0 in singles on Friday, lost to Natalie Wallin of Texas-San Antonio in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-2, but rebounded to defeat Kerryn Potgeiter of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-0 in the third-place match. Junior Lauren Wilson played the most exciting match Saturday, coming back from a set down to beat Lainy Chafitz, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in consolation of the top bracket.

    Freshman Rachel Knight captured both of her singles matches on Friday, cruising past Sumarie Muller of Texas St, 6-0, 6-2, and Idaline Muller of North Texas, 6-0, 6-1, in the winners consolation of the No. 2 singles bracket. Senior captain Kelly Morgan and freshman Erlyn Rudico also posted a singles win for Air Force.

    Rudico and junior Erika Shortridge comprosed the only Falcon doubles team to win a match on Saturday, downing Stacie Blair of North Texas and Deanna Carillo of Texas Tech, 8-2.

    The Falcons are back in action next weekend as they host the USAFA Invitational, Oct. 5-7.
