Falcons Complete Day One at Texas Tech Tourney

    The Air Force women's tennis team opened play Friday at the 2006 Scarborough Specialties Open hosted by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Joining the Falcons were players from Texas Tech, North Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Abilene Christian, New Mexico State and Texas State.

    Sophomore Christine Abayan was the only Falcon to go 2-0 in singles Friday, downing Samantha van der Drift of Texas Tech, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 and Samantha Moreton of North Texas, 7-6, 6-1. Abayan will face Natalie Wallin of Texas-San Antonio in the semifinals of the top bracket on Saturday. Abayan teamed with senior Kelly Morgan to split a pair of doubles matches, defeating Holly Lindloff and Lana Pavlin of Abilene Christian, 8-4, in the first round before falling to Anne Sophie Fankam and Brenna Jackson of Texas Tech by the same score.

    Four Falcons, Morgan, junior Lauren Wilson and freshmen Rachel Knight and Erlyn Rudico, each split two singles matches on Friday.

    Rudico and junior Erika Shortridge won their first-round doubles match, defeating Estelle Gulliaumond and Brenda Bongetta of New Mexico State, 8-4. The pair lost their second-round match to Sumarie Muller and Mackenzie Farmer of Texas State, 9-7.

    The tournament concludes on Saturday. Next weekend the Falcons will host the USAFA Invitational, Oct. 5-7.
