The Air Force women’s tennis team completed the 2013 USAFA Invitational on Sunday and juniors Natasha Rizvi and Marcelli Magday posted the Falcons’ best result with a second-place finish in the top doubles flight.
Rizvi and Magday had their nine-match winning streak snapped on Sunday with an 8-3 loss to Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier of New Mexico in the finals of the “A” doubles flight. Fellow junior Tiffany Tran and freshman Jocelle Rudico finished fourth in the same flight.
AFA’s two doubles teams in the “B” flight won on Sunday. Freshmen twins Chloe and Lily Forlini defeated Maddie Buxton and Kwynn Ecton of Colorado State, 8-5, while senior Anastasia Hueffner and freshman Tracy Landram beat Anamaria Candanoza and Laura Fernandez of Buffalo by the same score.
In singles, sophomore Mary Meyers finished third in the “B” flight with a 6-3, 6-1 victory Sunday over Fernandez. Chloe Forlini won the consolation draw in the “C” flight by defeating Alma Espinosa of Wyoming, 6-3, 6-0. Landram won all three of her matches in the round-robin “D” flight during the weekend, as did Margarita Kotok of Buffalo.
“Overall I was pleased with the tournament,” said Falcon head coach Kim Gidley. “The effort this team puts forth every time they step out on the court is amazing. The performance of Mary Meyers was great this week. Chloe Forlini also had a very strong singles tournament along with Tracy Landram.”
The Falcons play at the ITA Mountain Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., beginning Wednesday, Oct. 9.
