Air Force juniors Natasha Rizvi and Marcelli Magday advanced to the finals of the top doubles flight for the second straight tournament Saturday at the 2013 USAFA Invitational at the Academy. The Falcon duo won their ninth consecutive match, defeating Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal of West Virginia 8-1 in the semis.
Rizvi and Magday will face Dominique Dulski and Emily Olivier of New Mexico in the final on Sunday after the Lobo team snuck past Air Force’s team of junior Tiffany Tran and freshman Jocelle Rudico, 8-7(6), in the other semifinal. Tran and Rudico will face Barrett and Chahal for third place on Sunday.
In other doubles action on Saturday, AFA’s freshmen twins Chloe and Lily Forlini combined to beat Anamaria Candanoza and Laura Fernandez of Buffalo, 8-7(3), to advance to the fifth-place match of the “B” flight. They will face senior Anastasia Hueffner and freshman Tracy Landram, who downed Maddie Buxton and Kwynn Ecton of Colorado State, 8-5.
In singles, Tran will play for third place in the top flight after splitting a pair of matches on Saturday. Tran beat Barrett, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 before falling to Wyoming’s Veronica Popovici, 6-2, 6-0 in the semis. Sophomore Mary Meyers also split two matches on Saturday and will play for third place in the “B” flight.
Meanwhile, Lily Forlini, Landram and Rudico each won her match in the “D” flight and moved to 2-0 in the flight this weekend.
“I was very pleased with our doubles and we are getting better every day,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “In singles we had some tough matches and are making small breakthroughs with each competition.”
The tournament will conclude on Sunday with one round of doubles and singles. Play starts at 9 a.m.
