The Air Force women's tennis team wrapped up play Sunday at the Jayhawk Invitational hosted by the University of Kansas. The Falcons split their six singles matches on Sunday, with freshmen Allie Chermel, Shelley Johnson and Shannon Young each posting a victory.

Chermel easily defeated Chelsea Horner of UMKC, 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation bracket of the Jayhawk flight, while Johnson and Young each posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Caitlin Burke of UMKC and Kate Goff of Kansas, respectively. Those matches were in the consolation bracket of the Red flight.

In the best match of the day, freshman Tahlia Smoke dropped a thrilling three-set match to Rone Van Wyk of Arkansas State, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the consolation final of the Blue flight.

"Our young players showed a lot of leadership this weekend," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "We took six freshmen and two sophomores and they all made great strides during this tournament. Allie Chermel and Christen Monreal really stood out for us this weekend."

Air Force continues its fall schedule next weekend by hosting the annual USAFA Invitational. The two-day tournament begins Friday, Oct. 3 at the USAFA Outdoor Tennis Complex.
