The Air Force women's tennis continued its successful run Saturday at the Washington State Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash. The Falcons won five of nine singles matches and one doubles team advanced to the finals of its bracket.
Both Falcons in the "Crimson" singles flight, senior Christen Monreal and junior Tahlia Smoke, each lost in the round of 16 Saturday. Monreal fell to Morgan Basil of Boise State, 6-1, 6-1, while Smoke rallied from 6-4, 4-1 down to force a third set, only to lose 6-0 to Montana's Heather Davidson.
In the "Gray" singles bracket, senior Sarah Cassman advanced to Sunday's semifinals with a pair of straight-set wins on Saturday. She defeated Jackie Owens of Washington State, 6-2, 6-1 in the third round and the Cougars' Erin Troedson, 6-3, 7-5 in the quarters. Junior Megumi Voight and freshman Anastasia Hueffner each won her third-round match, but lost in the quarterfinals.
In doubles action, Monreal and Hueffner defeated Barbara Maciocha and Alejandra Lozano of Idaho, 8-4, in the semifinals before losing to Amanda Bran and Constance Alexander of Montana, 8-2 in the finals. Bran and Alexander had defeated Cassman and Voight, 8-4, in the semis.
"I was really impressed with how everyone battled today, it was another great team effort," said head coach Kim Gidley. "We made it to the finals in the second flight of doubles and all three doubles teams won 3 of 4 matches which is awesome this early in the year."
