BOSTON, Mass. – For the second weekend in a row, the Air Force Academy women's tennis team competed against NCAA tournament-caliber teams, at the Harvard Invitational.
"We are competing against teams that have already been to the dance,” explained head coach Kim Gidley. “For the second weekend in a row, with a very young team, we have proven that we can contend with highly competitive teams."
Juniors Elizabeth Barnickel and Meredith Laskey had an exceptional tournament as they played some of the best tennis to date since they've been at the Academy.
"As a coach it is exciting to see the progression of these players,” continued Gidley. “Furthermore, we have two freshmen in Jones and Harvey that are playing fearless with a lot of fun energy.”
In the doubles, the freshmen duo of Jones and Harvey finished second at the No. 2 flight, going 2-1 on the event.
The nationally ranked doubles team of Fumagalli/Barnickel won their first match, before losing the following two matches in tight battles.
“They've played some really tough teams already this season and are 4-2 on the year,” said Gidley on Barnickel and Fumagalli. “Their first round match was a tough-fought win against a number one team from the ACC.”
"It is so great to play these types of teams early on in our season, especially since we have individuals trying to qualify for the national indoors,” explained Gidley. “I saw an improvement from last weekend and I think the team learned some things along the way about what they are capable of achieving."
The women’s tennis team continues action next weekend at the Riviera All-American, in Los Angeles, Calif. Matches are slated to start at 9:00 a.m. PT, on each day.
