The Air Force women’s tennis team completed a successful first day of the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational Friday at the Naval Academy by winning five of eight singles matches and seven of eight doubles contests.
Juniors Tiffany Tran and Marcelli Magday and freshmen Chloe and Lily Forlini and Jocelle Rudico each won her singles match in straight sets on Friday, with Lily Forlini and Rudico each posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Tran won her match in the “A” flight, 7-5, 6-0 over Katelyn Hissong of Loyola while junior Natasha Rizvi dropped a thrilling, 7-6, 7-6 match to Kimmy Barza, the top player at Pittsburgh.
In doubles, the Falcons were nearly unstoppable. Tran and Rudico won both of their “A” flight matches, including and 8-6 decision over Ksenija Tihomirova and Nicole Chis of Fairleigh Divckinson in the second round. Rizvi and Magday also won twice in the top doubles flight, including saving two match points and winning five straight games before the team of Noelle Kaufmann and Mikaela Carlson of Navy were forced to retire at 7-6.
“What a great experience to play at the Naval Academy Tournament,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “We had a long day today as we were part of the last match off the court. Our fight the entire day was great in both singles and doubles. We had some adversity come our way and our team responded with that ‘can do attitude’. I could not be more pleased with our effort, fight and discipline!”
The three-day tournament continues on Saturday.
