Falcons Wrap Up Play at C of C Invitational

B1 Final Bracket in PDF Format The Air Force women's tennis team concluded play at the 2009 College of Charleston Invitational on Sunday at the Patriots Point Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Freshman Melissa Cecil captured the best finish for the Falcons, placing fifth in the A2 flight, while junior Sarah Cassman won the consolation title in the B1 flight. Cecil, who saved two match points to defeat Mary Hill of Coastal Carolina, 1-6, 7-5, (10-5) on Saturday, downed Brooke Pletcher of Charleston Southern, 7-5, 6-1 on Sunday. Cassman, meanwhile, won her third straight match with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Iveta Guneva of UNC Charlotte in the B1 flight consolation final. She also won the sportsmanship award for the entire tournament. Sophomore Allie Chermel posted two consecutive three-set victories in the consolation round of the B1 flight, defeating Guneva, 2-6, 6-0, (10-6) on Saturday, and Heather St. John of North Florida, 4-6, 6-4, (10-7) on Sunday. In doubles, the team of junior Katrina Eromin and freshman Hannah Dake produced the team's best finish, falling in the semis of the A1 flight to Laura Borza and Anna Lee Evans of College of Charleston. The Falcons continue their 2009 fall schedule at the University of Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colo., beginning next Friday, Sept. 25.
