Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake advanced to the finals of the top flight of the Gopher Invitational Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn. The duo won two matches on Saturday, defeating Diana Davitaia and Nino Mebuke of Eastern Michigan, 8-7, in the quarterfinals and Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi of UW-Milwaukee, 8-5, in the semis.
Hannah and Melissa have been playing very disciplined doubles and hit their targets well today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley of her team that will face Klara Supejova and Marija Toncheva of Eastern Michigan in the finals. "It is exciting to see them in the finals, especially since this is Hannah's hometown."
In the "B" doubles flight, junior Anastasia Hueffner and sophomore Marcelli Magday won their semifinal match, 8-2, against Mallory Shellum and Heather Annis of Gustavus Adolphus before falling to the Minnesota duo of Pauline Gilbert and Kelsey Frechette, 9-7, in the finals.
Tasha and Marcelli played well enough to win, going up 6-2, but could not close it out," said Gidley.
In singles action, sophomore Tiffany Tran lost in the semis of the "A" flightto Davitaia (EMU), 6-4, 6-1, while Cecil lost in the semis of the "B" flight to Christina Harazin of Iowa, 6-4, 6-3. Dake and senior Christine Molina will face off in the consolation final of the "A" flight, while Hueffner and freshman Mary Meyers will play in the consolation final of the "B" flight.
We went 6-2 in singles today, only losing in the semi-finals of each flight," said Gidley. "The fight by our team was good today."
The tournament concludes on Sunday.
