The Air Force women's tennis team opened its 2007 fall season Friday by participating at the Wyoming Cowgirl Invitational in Laramie, Wyo. Nine Falcons, including four freshmen, are playing in the three-day, bracketed tournament.

Senior co-captain Lauren Wilson, along with junior Christine Abayan and freshman Christen Monreal, are playing in the top singles flight. Wilson, who received a bye in the first round, fell to Tabatha Knop of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Both Abayan and Monreal lost her first-round match, but rebounded to defeat Karen Groll of Northern Colorado and Katy Prioetti, respectively, in the consolation half of the bracket.

Junior Meghan Kiser won her first-round match in the No. 2 flight, downing Remy Clark of Montana State, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. She will face Grace Farias of Weber State in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Sophomore Erlyn Rudico and freshman Sarah Cassman each last her first-round match and will play in the consolation round on Saturday.

Senior co-captain Erika Shortridge saved five match points before falling to Jodi Ciorvella of Northern Colorado, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(3) in the first round of the No. 3 flight. Freshmen Katrina Eromin and Samantha Sarkis advanced to the second round, however. Eromin beat Markay Mulken of Weber State, 6-3, 6-0, while Sarkis pulled out an exciting, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Manar Al-Jazzaf of Colorado State.

In doubles action, Wilson and Shortridge defeated the Wyoming duo of Corina Lazar and Michelle Brown, 8-6. The Falcon duo gained some revenge against the Wyoming team that defeated them last season in the dual match. That was the only doubles victory Friday for Air Force.
