    Play opened today at the 2006 Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Doubles began at 9 a.m and singles play began at 10:30 a.m. Teams participating in the tournament along with Minnesota are: Air Force, Boston University, Gonzaga, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Wichita State and the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay.

    Sophomore Christine Abayan was the only Falcon to win her first round match on Friday, caming from a set down to defeat Mariana Spilca of Minnesota, 4-6, 6-4 (10-5) in the top singles bracket. Abayan lost in the quarterfinals to Jacquline Lee of Iowa, 6-0, 6-1, and will face Erin Katims of Boston University in the consolation round on Saturday. All four doubles teams dropped first round matches and will continue in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

    The second round of doubles begins at 9 a.m. and singles resumes at noon on Saturday, September 16. Finals matches will be played on Sunday, September 17.
