No. 33 UNLV Downs Falcons, 4-0, in MWC Quarterfinals

The Air Force women's tennis team completed its best season in 11 years and first winning campaign since 2003 Thursday with a 4-0 loss to 33rd -ranked UNLV in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. The Falcons finished the season with a 16-12 record, their best since a 20-10 mark in 1998-99.
The second-seeded Rebels, who improved to 21-3 with the victory, took a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The nation's 58th-ranked team of Kristine Nedeltcheva and Jana Albers won at No. 1, 8-4, over junior Christen Monreal and freshman Hannah Dake, then Nives Pavlovic and Adrienn Hidvegi won the No. 3 doubles match, 8-4, over sophomore Tahlia Smoke and freshman Melissa Cecil. The No. 2 match was then halted with UNLV's duo of Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun leading sophomore Allie Chermel and freshman Christine Molina 6-5.
Rumyana Terzieva earned the second point for UNLV at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over junior Sarah Cassman and Albers made it 3-0 at No. 2 singles by rallying from a set down to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Smoke.
Pavlovic clinched the match for the Rebels with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot over Dake. The other three matches were then halted. At the No. 1 spot, Monreal had spilt sets with Nedeltcheva, the 50th-ranked player in the country, while Cecil was leading Maskaljun, 6-3, 5-4 at No. 5. Meanwhile, Hidvegi was winning the No. 4 match over Molina, 6-3, 3-4.
"This was a great way to end the season, finishing the conference tournament playing our best tennis of the year," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "In singles, we won sets in three different matches after losing all six to UNLV in straight sets just last week. This showed the true character of our team and what amazing fighters they are. It was a great effort to close a great season."
