Falcons Fall to UNLV in Mtn. West Quarterfinals

The Air Force women's tennis team wrapped up its 2012-13 season Friday with 4-1 loss to 65th-ranked UNLV in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Mountain West Tennis Championships at the Academy. The Falcons conclude the season with a 13-11 overall record, while the Rebels improved to 17-7 overall and advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the No 2 and 3 doubles matches. UNLV's No. 1 team of Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic were off the court first with an 8-4 victory over seniors Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake. Sophomores Tiffany Tran and Marcelli Magday then rallied from a 7-4 deficit to win the No. 3 match, 9-7, over Iren Kotseva and Ella Bourchier at the No. 3 position, setting up the deciding match at No. 2. Senior Christine Molina and sophomore Natasha Rizvi clinched the point with a thrilling 9-8 victory over Janine Erasmus and Aleksandra Josifoska. The Falcons won the tiebreaker 7-5.
Unfortunately, Air Force could not hold the momentum over to singles action. Batta, ranked 83rd in the nation, downed Tran, 6-2, 6-0 to even the match at 1-all. Kotseva put the Rebels up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Hueffner at No. 6, followed by Pavlovic beating Dake, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Josifoska, ranked 35th in the nation, rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to clinch the match with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Molina at the No. 1 spot.
The other two matches were then halted with freshman Mary Meyers leading Bouchier 6-4, 5-5 at No. 5 and Erasmus leading Rizvi 7-5, 2-4 at the No. 3 position.
