The Air Force Academy women's tennis team lost its first-round match at the 2003 Mountain West Conference Championships Thursday, 4-0 to No. 48 New Mexico. The Lobos won matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, then No. 3, 4 and 6 singles. Sixth-seed Air Force (15-12) will play the seventh-seeded Utah Utes in the consolation bracket on Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m., in San Diego, Calif.

UNM's No. 1 doubles team of Sandy Lukowski and Maja Kovacek began the Lobo dominance with an 8-6 win at the No. 1 doubles spot over Laura Nigro and Gina Black. At No. 3, Rachel Hatley and Maria Ruiz-Fabrega downed Kelli O'Bryant and Jen Nigro, 8-2, to grab the doubles point. The No. 2 match was halted when UNM clinched the doubles point.

In singles competition the Lobos posted decisive wins at the No. 3, 4 and 6 positions by Tjasa Suvak, Michelle Heidbrink and Hatley, respectively. Suvak defeated Kat Bushey, 6-0, 6-1, while Heidbrink downed Gina Black, 6-2, 6-3. Hatley clinched the team match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Katie Tomkie.
