Falcons' Season Ends With 4-1 Loss to UNLV at MW Tourney
April 23, 2014
The Air Force women's tennis team saw its 2013-14 season come to an end Wednesday with a 4-1 loss to UNLV in the first round of the 2014 Mountain West Championships in Fresno, Calif. The eighth-seeded Rebels improved to 11-10 and will face top-seeded Fresno State on Friday, while the ninth-seeded Falcons finish the campaign with a 17-9 overall record.
UNLV took an early 1-0 lead by winning at No. 3 and 1 doubles. Aleksandra Josifoska and Iren Kotseva posted an 8-5 win over senior Anastasia Hueffner and Marcelli Magday at the No. 3 spot. Santa Shumlina and Lucia Batta clinched the point with an 8-5 victory over junior Natasha Rizvi and sophomore Mary Meyers at the No. 1 position. The No. 2 match was then pulled off the court with AFA’s duo of junior Tiffany Tran and freshman Lily Forlini leading Paola Artiga and Alexis Garrett 5-4.
The Rebels gained a 3-0 lead fairly quickly with dominating wins at the top two singles spots. Josifoska defeated Meyers, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and Batta beat Tran 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot. Magday notched the lone point for Air Force with an impressive 6-0, 6-4 victory over Shumlina at No. 4, but Artiga completed the match by downing Forlini, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.
The other two matches were halted at that time with Kotseva leading Rizvi 7-5, 4-1 at No. 3 and AFA freshman Tracy Landram and Anett Ferenczi-Bako splitting sets at No. 6.
“We had a lot of opportunities for the doubles point today but could not convert,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “In singles, we came out and had a great finish by Marcelli. Having everyone return in our singles lineup, we need to use this match as a starting point for next season.”
