April 22, 2009
The Air Force women's tennis team put up a good fight Wednesday morning in the opening round of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship, but ended up dropping a 4-3 decision to Wyoming at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center in Albuquerque, N.M. Air Force, which lost its fourth 4-3 match of the season, ended the 2008-09 campaign with a 10-17 record.
Wyoming took an early 1-0 lead after the doubles action. The Cowgirls, who had to default at the No. 3 position because they only had five players, won at the top two spots by the same score, 8-4. At the No. 1 spot, Sarah Summerfield and Carly Can Hollen downed senior Christine Abayan and junior Erlyn Rudico, while Rebecca Berger and Jamie Nelson won the No. 2 match over sophomore Christen Monreal and freshman Allie Chermel, 8-4.
With Wyoming also defaulting the No. 6 singles match, the Falcons evened the team match a 1-all. Monreal captured her 22nd singles victory of the season, defeating Summerfield at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-4, then Wyoming tied the score at 2-all when Van Hollen dominated Chermel, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
The last three singles matches all went to three sets with each team looking for two wins to clinch the team match. Ironically, each match was won by the player that lost the first set. Berger gave the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead by rallying for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Abayan at the No. 2 position, then the final two matches ended simultaneously. Air Force sophomore Sarah Cassman dropped the first set against Nelson, then captured her 22nd singles win of the season with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 4 spot and Carolina Chaix sealed the victory for Wyoming by defeating Katrina Eromin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.
