Falcons Drop 6-1 Decision to 41st-ranked San Diego State
April 20, 2013
The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to 41st-ranked San Diego State Saturday at the Academy. The match was originally scheduled to be played in Fort Collins, but weather issues forced the change to USAFA. With the victory, the Aztecs clinched the Mountain West title with a perfect 8-0 league record and improved to 20-4 overall, while the Falcons fell to 13-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.
San Diego State jumped out to a 1-0 doubles point by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 matches. The teams split the first two matches off the court, as Falcon seniors Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake won the No. 1 match 8-5 over Laura Antonana Iriarte and Michela Casanova, and SDSU's No. 3 team of Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn downed sophomores Tiffany Tran and Marcelli Magday by the same score. The Aztecs clichéd the point at No. 2 when Julia Wais and Kristin Buth defeated senior Christine Molina and sophomore Natasha Rizvi 9-7.
The Falcons won the first set in four of the six singles matches and it looked like an upset could be in the making. Unfortunately, Air Force won just one of the six contests as Rizvi downed Buth, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. SDSU won the top two matches in straight sets and then rallied from a set down to win the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 matches.
Antonana Iriarte beat Dake 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) at the No. 3 position, while Tami Nguyen defeated freshman Mary Meyers, 2-6, 6-1, (10-3) and Dora Somoracz downed junior Anastasia Hueffner, 1-6, 6-4, (10-6).
