Boise State Blanks Air Force, 7-0
April 14, 2013
The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Boise State on Senior Day at the Academy. With the victory, the Broncos improved to 12-7 and 4-2 in the Mountain West, while the Falcons fell to 13-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Boise State jumped out to a 1-0 doubles point by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 matches. Seniors Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake won the No. 1 match 8-4 over Marlena and Manuela Pietzuch. Boise State's No. 2 team of Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil rallied from a 6-4 deficit and won the last four games to defeat senior Christine Molina and sophomore Natasha Rizvi at No. 2, while Megan LaLone and Bobbi Oshiro clinched the point with an 8-6 victory over sophomores Tiffany Tran and Marcelli Magday at the No. 3 spot.
"It was nice to see our seniors win at No. 1 doubles," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "If we convert on the doubles point, it could have been a different match entirely, and we played well enough to win the point."
The Broncos sailed through the six singles matches all in straight sets. Vo made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tran at No. 2, then Basil downed Dake, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Marlena Pietzuch beat Molina, 6-3, 6-4, within seconds of each other to clinch the match for BSU.
LaLone snuck past Rizvi, 7-5, 7-6(5) at No. 4, Manuela Pietzuch defeated junior Anastasia Hueffner, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 and Sammie Watson closed out the match with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-4 triumph over freshman Mary Meyers at No. 5.
"We battled hard in singles today," said Gidley. "We just did not convert when we had opportunities."
The Falcons travel to Fort Collins, Colo., next weekend to battle San Diego State (Saturday, April 20) and UNLV (Sunday, April 21) to close out the 2013 regular season.
