April 14, 2012
The Air Force women's tennis team won its second Mountain West match of the season Saturday, defeating league newcomer Boise State, 5-2, at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. With the win, the Falcons improved to 16-6 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West, while the Broncos fell to 8-12 and 2-5.
After losing the No. 1 doubles match, 8-1, Air Force's No. 3 team of junior Christine Molina and freshman Tiffany Tran posted an 8-3 victory over Kaitlyn Brown and Sonia Klamczynska, 8-3, setting up the deciding match at No. 2. AFA's duo of junior Hannah Dake and freshman Natasha Rizvi gave away a match point at 7-4 to Boise State's team of Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil and lost four straight games to trail 8-7, but rebounded and sent the match to a tiebreak, which the falcon team won 7-4 to grab the doubles point.
The Falcons used that momentum in singles play as Rizvi blanked Brown at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0 for a 2-0 lead. Cecil lost the No. 1 match by the same score, but Dake put Air Force up 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Manuela Pietzuch at the No. 5 spot.
Vo kept the Broncos alive, rallying for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Smoke at the No. 3 position, then Molina clinched the match for Air Force with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Marlena Pietzuch. Tran rounded out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Basil at the No. 4 spot.
"This was one of our best matches of the season and we are right where we need to be at this time in the season." Said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "We were in this situation last week and did not pull through so this was great to see them play to win with a very hostile Boise state crowd."
Air Force returns home for its last two regular-season matches next weekend, beginning against Colorado State on Friday, April 20 at 4 p.m.
