Air Force Falls to BYU, 6-1

The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to BYU Thursday afternoon at the Academy. Junior Sarah Cassman posted the lone victory for Air Force, winning the No. 6 singles match. Air Force fell to 14-7 overall and 1-2 in Mountain West Conference action, while the Cougars improved to 6-11 and 2-2. The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles competition. At the top doubles spot, McCall Jones and Megan Price posted an 8-3 triumph over Christen Monreal and Hannah Dake. BYU also got doubles wins from Kristina Doerr and Chie Hayasaka, 8-3, over Tahlia Smoke and Allie Chermel at No. 2, and Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova, 8-5, over Christine Molina and Melissa Cecil at No. 3. Cassman improved to 22-12 overall and 15-6 this spring with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Aubrey Paul, but BYU won the other five matches, three of them in three sets. Jones, ranked 52nd in the nation, defeated Monreal, 6-2, 6-3 at the top spot, while Doerr beat Smoke, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Hayasaka rallied to win the No. 3 match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Dake and Carney downed Molina, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Ezhova wrapped up the team match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Cecil at the No. 5 spot. Air Force returns to action on Friday, April 9 when it hosts 39th-ranked Utah at the Academy. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
