Falcons Fall to Wyoming 6-1

The Air Force women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the University of Wyoming Friday at the Academy. The Falcons fell to 14-7 overall and 10-7 this spring, including a 1-2 record in the Mountain West. Wyoming, meanwhile, is 7-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Wyoming took a 1-0 lead by taking two out of three doubles matches. Alena Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova defeated senior Anastasia Hueffner and junior Marcelli Magday 8-4 at No. 3, while Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici earned the point with an 8-3 win over junior Natasha Rizvi and sophomore Mary Meyers at the No. 1 position. AFA’s No. 2 team of junior Tiffany Tran and freshman Lily Forlini defeated Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva 8-4.
In singles action, the Cowgirls continued their strong play by winning five of six matches. At the top spot, Popovici defeated Tran, 6-3, 6-1, while Jonas needed three sets to beat Meyers, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. The Falcons only point of the match came with Rizvi beating Zhelyazkova, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. Gecheva also went three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in her win over Magday at No. 4. In the final two matches, Espinosa beat freshman Chloe Forlini, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5 followed by Vasileva over Tracy Landram, 8-6, at No. 5.
“Wyoming is a very good team and they stepped it up at the end when they needed to,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “Hopefully we can see how close we are and this will motivate us the last couple of conference matches.”
The Falcons host two non-conference matches on Saturday against North Dakota (10 a.m.) and Colorado College (1 p.m.).
