Falcons Drop MWC Opener to #47 San Diego State, 7-0
April 2, 2011
The Air Force women's tennis team dropped its 2011 Mountain West Conference opener Saturday, 7-0, to 47th-ranked San Diego State in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs improved to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in the MWC while the Falcons fell to 14-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. SDSU swept the three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Roxanne and Sierra Ellison won the No. 1 match, 8-3, over junior Tahlia Smoke and Melissa Cecil, while Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais defeated senior Christen Monreal and freshman Anastasia Hueffner at No. 2 by the same score. Emma Cioffi and Julia Trunk took the No. 3 match, 8-1, over senior Sarah Cassman and sophomore Hannah Dake. The Aztecs kept their momentum throughout the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets. Hueffner kept her match the closest, falling to Roxanne Ellison, 6-4, 7-6(5) at the No. 5 spot. Cecil played a solid first set at No. 2 against Wais before falling 7-5, 6-1. "I was really proud of Anastasia Hueffner today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "She fought hard in both sets. She was down 5-0 in the first set before her opponent closed it out and she (Hueffner) fought back in the second set. It was a disappointing result for us, but SDSU is the highest-ranked team we have faced this season. We need to make some adjustments for playing outside, we have been a great indoor team so far this spring." The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, April 3 against UNLV beginning at 10 a.m. (PT).
