Falcons Win League Opener 5-2 Over Utah State
March 28, 2014
The Air Force women's tennis team rallied to win five of the six singles matches after losing the doubles point to claim a 5-2 victory over Utah State in its first Mountain West match of the season. The Falcons improved to 9-5 and 1-0 in the league this spring while the Aggies fell to 10-7 and 0-3.
Utah State won the No. 1 doubles match as McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry downed junior Natasha Rizvi and sophomore Mary Meyers 8-4. AFA's No. 2 team of junior Tiffany Tran and freshman Lily Forlini defeated Nini Guensler and Lexi Turley by the same score, then USU took the point when Amber Stuhlmann and Katie Sweet beat senior Anastasia Hueffner and junior Marcelli Magday 8-5.
The Falcons turned things around quickly in the singles matches, winning the first set in all six matches. Rizvi evened the match at 1-all with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sperry at No. 3, followed by Meyers winning the No. 2 match over Guensler, 6-2, 6-1. Magday made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Sweet at No. 4, but Davis pulled the Aggies within one by rallying to defeat Tran 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at the top spot.
Freshman Tracy Landram clichéd the match for Air Force and improved to 22-2 overall and 14-1 in dual matches with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Turley at No. 5 and Forlini closed it out by downing Cassidy Branstine 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
"What an amazing team effort and conference win on the road for the team today," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Utah State came out on fire in the doubles and had a great crowd. We came out a little intimated with their noise and energy, along with playing our first conference match of the season. It is tough to win on the road against a talented conference team and I could not be prouder of the effort in a challenging environment."
The Falcons play at Idaho State on Saturday, March 29 beginning at 10 a.m.
