Falcons Drop Two 4-3 Decisions on Monday

The Air Force women's tennis team dropped a pair of 4-3 matches to Xavier and UNC-Greensboro Monday at the Academy. Counting last Friday's 4-3 loss to New Mexico State, the Falcons have lost their last three matches by a 4-3 count, and had match points in each to win the dual match. The Falcons fell to 9-8 this season. In the opener, the Falcons swept the three doubles matches, including the 11th straight win by sophomore Christen Monreal and freshman Allie Chermel, an 8-4 triumph at the No. 2 position against Kara Courtney and Kaitlyn Zinn. Monreal won the No. 2 singles match, defeating Tifanie Treece, 6-2, 7-5, while sophomore Katrina Eromin downed Zinn, 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot. Xavier won two of the singles matches in three sets, including the clincher at No. 6, where Jill Ducro saved a match point and defeated Falcon freshman Shannon Young, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Against UNC-Greensboro, the Falcons lost the doubles point with losses at the top two spots. Junior Christine Abayan and sophomore Sarah Cassman won the No. 3 match, 8-6, over Britney Cloer and Jessica Eblen. Monreal and Chermel saw their streak come to an end with a hard-fought, 9-8 loss to Valerie Behr and Lucy Dougherty. The Spartan duo won the tiebreaker, 10-8. The teams split the six singles matches, and three of them went three sets, with UNCG winning two of those. Monreal won her 10th straight singles match, defeating Arielle VonStrolley, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 2, Eromin beat Cloer at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2 and Young rebounded with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Eblen. Alejandra Guerra won the top singles match for the Spartans, defeating Abayan, 6-1, 6-2, while Dougherty defeated Air Force sophomore Samantha Sarkis, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at the No. 5 position. Behr capped the match by saving three match points to defeat Cassman, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(3) at the No. 3 spot.
Air Force opens Mountain West Conference play next Saturday, march 7 against Wyoming in Laramie. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
