Falcons Blank Houston 7-0

The Air Force women’s tennis team won its fourth consecutive match, blanking the University of Houston 7-0 Friday at the Academy. The Falcons improved to 8-4 this season, while the Cougars had their five-match winning streak snapped, fell to 8-4.
The Falcons opened the match by winning the doubles point with victories at the top two spots. Senior Christine Molina and sophomore Natasha Rizvi got things rolling with an 8-0 victory over Elena Kordolaimi and Jo Garvey at the No. 2 spot. Seniors Melissa Cecil and Hannah Dake clinched the point with an 8-4 triumph over Rocio Fernandez and Charlotte Philllips at the No. 1 position.
In singles action, the Falcons swept all six matches, four of them in straight sets. Dake got things rolling with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fernandez at the No. 3 position, followed by Rizvi defeating Phillips, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Sophomore Tiffany Tran (No. 2) and Cecil (No. 5) also won in straight sets, while Molina downed Kordolaimi, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 1 and freshman Mary Meyers rallied to beat Garvey, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8), at the No. 6 spot.
“This was a great win for our team today,” said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. “The word for the day was ‘BATTLE’ and that is exactly what our team did from the start. Our players came out on fire in the doubles and they never let Houston breathe. This was a match were everyone on our team showed up and I could not be prouder of their effort. Throughout our singles line-up we had players on our team just “battle” for every point and that was the difference in the match.
The Falcons host Montana State on Friday, March 8 beginning at 10 a.m.
