Feb. 20, 2009
The Air Force women's tennis team won a pair of matches Friday at the Academy. The Falcons, who have now won six straight matches, defeated Akron, 5-2, and Weber State, 7-0, and have their first six-match winning streak since the 2002-03 season. With the two victories, Air Force is now 8-5 in 2009.
Sophomore Christen Monreal, the reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, continued her sizzling play with four wins on Friday. She won both of her matches at the No. 2 singles position and won both No. 3 doubles matches with freshman Allie Chermel. Monreal and Chermel have posted eight consecutive doubles wins, while the Falcons have won the doubles point in seven straight matches.
Sophomores Sarah Cassman, Katrina Eromin and Samantha Sarkis also won two singles matches on Friday, with Eromin posting an exciting, 6-1, 4-6, (10-6) victory over Weber State's Karlie Hancock at the No. 5 spot. Chermel also won her match against Weber State in three sets, rallying to defeat Keya Jenkins, 5-7, 6-4, (10-8) at the No. 3 position. Sarkis also won both of her doubles matches with senior Christine Abayan.
"This was really a great day for us," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "The match against Akron was an extremely hard fought match. Akron beat West Virginia a few weeks earlier and has a winning record, so this was certainly a good win for our team."
