BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Colorado edged by Air Force, 4-3, in hard fought loss, Sunday afternoon in Boulder, Colorado. The loss marks the Falcons’ first of the season.
In the doubles portion, Meredith Laskey and Carley Hatcliff were up at the No. 3 position, 5-2, and had a match point, but was just not able to pull out the win. At the No. 2 position, Meredith Jones and Ashleigh Harvey were down, 4-0, while TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel were down, 3-0, in the No. 1 position. The Falcons battled back into both matches, but the holes dug early on proved to be too deep to climb out of.
Despite losing the doubles point, the team battled back to a shot at winning the dual match. Barnickel played one of the most impressive matches of her career as she dominated her opponent in straight sets.
Falcon freshman Meredith Jones followed up on the same court. Jones had a hard fought first set and then never let her opponent back in the match by hitting every kind of shot in tennis. The other freshmen in the line-up, Ashleigh Harvey, unleashed new levels of tennis as she fought back after losing the first set and battling back from a 3-2 deficit.
“Colorado is a very talented team,” said head coach Kim Gidley. “We knew we had our work cut out for us to play them on the road.”
“It was the difference of just a few points in the matches we lost,” continued Gidley. “Overall, it really was some great tennis today and a relentless effort.”
Air Force continues action next weekend as the squad travels to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on Rockhurst and UMKC in non-conference matches on Sunday, Feb. 11.
