Falcons Defeat Seattle and Northern Colorado on Saturday

The Air Force women's tennis team improved its record to 2-2 this season with two victories Saturday at the Academy. In the morning, the Falcons won their first match of the season by defeating Seattle University, 6-1, then pulled out a 4-3 decision over Northern Colorado later in the day. Junior Tahlia Smoke went 4-0 on the day, while sophomore Hannah Dake won both of her singles matches. Smoke, won the No. 3 match in each contest, defeating Gabriell Weissman of Seattle, 6-1, 6-3, and Elizabeth Tapia of Northern Colorado, 6-2, 6-0. She also paired with sophomore Melissa Cecil to win both matches at No. 1 doubles. They beat Seattle's No. 1 team of Steffanie Mortera and Katrina Schwab, 8-3, then downed UNC's top team of Jennifer Whateley and Tapia, 8-5. Dake, meanwhile, captured both of her matches at the No. 4 singles spot, beating Sarah Lucas of Seattle, 6-1, 6-0 and UNC's Jill Kappel 6-2, 6-3. Senior Sarah Cassman (No. 5) and freshman Anastasia Hueffner (No. 6) each won her singles match against Seattle, while senior Christen Monreal won the No. 1 match against UNC, defeating Whateley, 6-0, 6-4. "This was a long day filled with great energy," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "We had two tough matches and played the best Northern Colorado team in the past 14 years. Tahlia Smoke had an amazing day, posting wins at No. 1 doubles and straight set wins at No. 3 singles." The Falcons, who won five of the six doubles matches during the day, head to Bozeman, Mont., next weekend to face Montana State, Montana and Gonzaga.
