Falcons Fall to No. 71 Colorado, 4-3, in Spring Opener
The Air Force women’s tennis team opened its 2011 spring season Friday afternoon with a tough 4-3 loss to 71st-ranked Colorado at the Academy. Freshman Anastasia Hueffner was the only Falcon to win both of her singles and doubles matches. The Buffaloes opened a 1-0 lead with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles spots. Abbie Probert and Michala Jensen captured the No. 1 match, 8-4, over Air Force junior Tahlia Smoke and sophomore Melissa Cecil, while Carla Manzi and Kristina Schleich won 8-5 over senior Sarah Cassman and junior Megumi Voight at No. 3. The Falcons’ No. 2 doubles team of senior Christen Monreal and Hueffner won a tight match over Erin Sanders and Ania Anuszkiewicz, 8-7, winning the tiebreak, 7-5. CU captured the team victory by winning the first three singles matches off the court. Schleich started things with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cassman at No. 4, followed by the No. 1 match where Sanders downed Monreal, 6-4, 6-2. Jensen clinched it for the Buffs with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Dake at No. 3. After Voight won the No. 6 match when Manzi retired at 0-3 in the first set, the Falcons won the last two singles matches in three sets. Smoke defeated Probert, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot and Hueffner rallied from a set down to beat Anuskiewicz, 3-6, 6-3, (10-6).
