Las Vegas, Nev. – The Falcon women’s tennis squad posted a commanding 6-1 victory over three-time WAC champions, Grand Canyon University, Saturday afternoon. Air Force swept doubles action, led by TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel who posted a 6-0 shutout over their opponents.
“Vegas is feeling lucky,” exclaimed head coach Kim Gidley. “We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout for our first match of the season. I’m pleased with the team’s performance after coming off of one week of practice and playing on the road at sea level against a tough WAC championship team.”
The Falcons’ No.1 team played with intensity and handled business like true athletes as they shut out their opponents. Air Force’s No. 2 team battled through some nerves early on but showed their grit and resiliency as they converted for the win and the doubles point. With the doubles point secured, the duo in the No. 3 position did not let up, winning their match, 6-3.
In singles action, the upperclassmen displayed excellent leadership, proving they could battle back from early deficits. Contrarily, the Falcons that took an early lead, proved that they could maintain that lead and close out the match with success. Three of six Air Force singles won their matches in straight sets.
“Our goal was to start off where we left last season,” continued Gidley. “It was all about energy and effort today and this team was relentless in executing those goals.
The Falcons continue action tomorrow against Southern Utah at noon.
