The Air Force women's tennis team opened its 2009 spring season with a 5-2 loss to in-state rival University of Colorado Tuesday at the Academy. Sophomores Sarah Cassman and Katrina Eromin won the No. 5 and 6 singles match, respectively, in straight sets for Air Force.
The Buffaloes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Monica Milewski and Camila Belassi took the No. 1 match, 8-3, over senior Christine Abayan and junior Erlyn Rudico, while Franziska Jendrian and Melisa Esposito captured the No. 2 match over freshmen Allie Chermel and Tahlia Smoke, 8-4. Abbie Probert and Anna Anuszkiewicz beat Cassman and fellow sophomore Christen Monreal, 9-8, at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Cassman defeated Anuszkiewicz, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 position, while Eromin downed Probert, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6 to give Air Force its two points. The Buffaloes won the top four matches, with Milewski winning the No. 1 match, 6-3, 6-3, over Abayan and Esposito taking a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Chermel at the No. 2 spot.
The best match of the day was at No. 3, where Belassi rallied to beat Monreal, 6-7, 7-5, (10-8). Jendrian won the final point for CU with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Smoke at the No. 4 spot.
"This was a good start for the beginning of our spring season," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "We had a couple of great straight-set wins by Sarah and Katrina and we had a lot of chances in doubles that we just did not take advantage of."
The Falcons travel to Pullman, Wash., this weekend for four matches, beginning with a contest against Eastern Washington on Friday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m.
