Falcons Swim Well In First Day Action At Big West Shootout


    IRVINE, Calif. - The Air Force men's and women's swimming and diving teams took on some of the top swimming programs on the west coast Friday at the Big West Shootout. The Falcon women's team went 1-3 in head-to-head action, while the men's team went 1-2.
    The Falcon men beat UC Davis 89-51, while falling to UC Irvine 94-46 and to Hawai'i 124-16. The AFA women beat Pepperdine 80-60 and lost to UC Irvine 114-26, Hawai'i 121-19 and UC Davis 88-52.
    Sophomore Chris Knaute fared well for Air Force, taking third in the 500 yard freestyle (4:35.11) and 1650 free (15:56.27) and fourth in the 400 indivudual medley (4:06.75). Senior Evan Parr also did well, taking fourth in the 100 back (53.83) and fifth in the 200 back (1:58.82).
    The Falcons men did well in the 1650 free and 400 IM events. After Knaute's third place finish in the 1650, senior team captian Ryan Fitzgerald took fourth (16:32.57) and junior Matt Karmondy placed (16:36.28). Sophomore Paul Parmenter and junior Kimo Yamashiro followed up Knaute in the 400 IM taking fifth (4:16.68) and sixth (4:18.70).
    Also faring well was sophomore Matt Sievers, who took fourth in the 100 butterfly (52.11). Freshman Davey Greer was the top male diver for the Falcons, placing second in the three-meter dive (259.20) and fourth in the one-meter dive (214.45).
    On the women's side, junior Carly Omizo had some strong times, placing fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.58) and seventh in the 200 breast (2:26.81). Sophomore Lauren White also did well, taking fourth in the 1650 free (17:35.84) and sixth in the 500 free (5:09.49).
    Sophomore Blair Leake took sixth in the 200 breast (2:26.64) and senior Julienne White was also sixth in the 1650 free (17:49.33). The top diver for the Falcon women was freshman Danielle Dowds, who finished fourth in the one- (204.30) and two-meter (212.90) dives.
    The Falcons return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of swims at the Big West Shootout.
