Air Force Women Start 2008-09 Season at WAC Shootout

    The Air Force women's swimming and diving team opens its season this weekend, Oct. 10-11 at the WAC Shootout, hosted by New Mexico State. The Falcons will go head-to-head versus Nevada, Northern Colorado and San Jose State on Friday, while facing Boise State, host New Mexico State and Northern Arizona on Saturday. Friday's action is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m., while Saturday's events will start at 10:00 a.m.

    Scouting the Falcons...
    The Air Force women's swimming and diving team, picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West Conference this season, returns 12 letterwinners from the 2007-08 season.

    Leading the Falcons this year is senior captain Jane Hwang, a five-time all-conference performer and school record-holder in three events.

    Scouting the Wolf Pack...
    Nevada, which has won two consecutive team titles in the Western Athletic Conference, opens its season this weekend.

    Among the top returners for the Wolf Pack are four WAC champions: 2008 WAC Freshman of the Year Jeanette Tour (100, 200 back), WAC Swimmer of the Year Margaret Doolittle (200 IM, 100, 200 breast), Summer Halwas-Morgan (400 IM) and Kim Kabesh (100 fly).

    Scouting the Bears...
    Northern Colorado, which finished fourth at the 2008 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference Championships and sixth at the Conference USA Championships, opens its season at the WAC Shootout this weekend.

    Leading the Bears' returners this season is junior Nan Liu, who won the PCSC title in the 200 butterfly, and sophomore diver Kelly Schmeckpepper-Cook, the PCSC Diver of the Year in 2008.

    Scouting the Spartans...
    San Jose State, which took fourth place at the 2008 WAC Championships, enters this weekend with an 0-1 record after dropping its season-opener to Stanford on Oct. 3.

    Freshman Heather Denman was the Spartans' top finisher against the Cardinal, taking second place in the 100 backstroke. Among the top returners for San Jose State is sophomore Kirsten Trammell, who took third in the 400 IM at the 2008 WAC Championships.

     

     

    Scouting the Broncos...
    Boise State, the seventh-place finisher at the 2008 WAC Championships, enters this weekend with an 0-4 record, with a pair of losses to both Utah and Washington.

    The top finishers for the Broncos in their first weekend of action were freshmen Emily Irvin and Erin Lionberger, who registered second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 3-meter dive, respectively.

    Scouting the Aggies...
    New Mexico State, which captured fifth place at the 2008 WAC Championships, opens its season this weekend at the WAC Shootout.

    Among the leading returners for the Aggies this season are junior Liz Thomson, who finished second in the 400 IM at last year's WAC Championships, and senior Stephanie Peacock the WAC runner-up in the 100 backstroke.

    Scouting the Lumberjacks...
    Northern Arizona, the second-place finisher at the 2008 WAC Championships, opens the 2008-09 season at this weekend's WAC Shootout.

    Leading the Lumberjacks' returners is junior Rachael Foe, who placed second at the WAC Championships in both the 50 and 100 free, while also placing third in the 100 butterfly.

    Up Next...
    The Air Force women's swimming and diving team returns to action Oct. 25, when it heads to San Diego, Calif., to face Colorado State, New Mexico and San Diego State in its conference opener. Meanwhile, the men's swimming team opens its 2008-09 season next weekend, Oct. 17-18, at the Early Bird Invitational, hosted by Colorado State.
