Falcons Split with New Mexico & Wyoming


    The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team split a Mountain West Conference double dual meet at home Saturday. The Falcons defeated New Mexico 58-55, but fell to Wyoming 57-56. Wyoming beat New Mexico 64-49 in their dual meet.

    Both Air Force meets came down to the last race, the 400 freestyle relay. Wyoming edged the Falcons by 15 hundredths of a second to win the seven points and the team meet. Meanwhile, Air Force beat New Mexico in the same race by more than six seconds to win the dual with the Lobos.

    Senior Mary Edith Smith and junior Niki Van't Wout captured individual victories for the Falcons. Smith won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.66 seconds, while Van't Wout won the 200 backstroke in a season-best time of 2:09.34. Smith added a second-place in the 50 freestyle, while teammates Alexis Ross (500 free, 1000 free) and Sara Crowell (200 breaststroke, 200 IM) each posted two second-place finishes.

    Sophomore diver Sarah Law won the 1-meter springboard event with 278.75 points, and placed second in the 3-meter event.

    Sandra Colburn of New Mexico recorded two individual victories, in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle races.

    Air Force, now 11-7 overall and 2-4 against MWC opponents, travels to Denver on Wednesday, Jan. 24 to face the DU Pioneers, before resuming Mountain West Conference action in Las Vegas against UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 27.
