Falcon Swimmers Split at Utah
The Air Force Academy men's and women's swim teams split a pair of
Mountain West Conference dual meets with the University of Utah Saturday,
Jan. 13, in Salt Lake City. The Falcon men won their first MWC meet of the
season, 162-131, while the Air Force women lost 178-118.
Air Force's men won 11 of the 14 races, led by sophomore John Dayton, who claimed individual victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 freestyle. He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams. Dayton joined Paul Brehm, Nate Amidon and Charlie Toth in setting AFA's fastest time this season in the 200 medley at 1:35.71. Senior Josh Finch also posted two victories, winning the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley, while Toth (50 freestyle) and Stewart Parker (1,650 freestyle) each won an individual event and joined Dayton and Eric Baber on the 200 freestyle relay team. Khalil Sharif (200 butterfly), Race Steinfort (200 backstroke) and Matt Ihlenfeld (200 breaststroke) also claimed victories for Air Force, which improved to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the MWC. Stephen Linge won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly for Utah, which fell to 0-5 overall and in the conference. The Utah women claimed 12 of 14 races, with Melissa Chamberlain winning three and Heidi Hausknecht two. Air Force's Sarah Thilo won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:48.27, and Niki Van't Wout was victorious in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:09.66. Thilo added a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle, while Van't Wout was second in the 100 backstroke. The Falcons are now 8-6 overall and 1-4 in the MWC. The Falcons return home next weekend as the women face New Mexico State and Northern Colorado in a triangular meet on Friday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m., then host MWC rivals New Mexico and Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. in the final home meet of the season. The men host Wyoming in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 20 in their final home meet of the 2000-01 campaign.
